Frequently Asked Questions
-
When you submit a request on my contact page, I will get back to you within 24-48 hours to schedule our 20 minute phone call. During this call, we will chat about what is bringing you into therapy and what you’re looking to get out of therapy. We will talk about my approach and our clinical fit, as well as logistics (scheduling, fee, etc) and any other questions you may have

Everyone needs someone (ideally more then one someone but let’s start there). The first session (the initial evaluation) is a bit more structured with a lot more questions- I look to get a sense of who you are in the world, talking about not only what’s bringing you in, but also starting to get a sense of your other life areas like school/work, dating/partnerships, family relationships, friendships, housing, finances, medical and mental health history. We also talk a little bit about the practice policies, fit and scheduling, and some sense of goals or what you’re looking to get out of our time together. Subsequent sessions are much more open, where you have the space to talk about whatever is needed and of course we keep an eye on making sure we are working on what has brought you in and what you are looking to get out of therapy.

I hope you will also talk to your support network, whoever that entails. Therapy sessions are not identical to conversations we have with loved ones. Ideally, therapists are more objective, have a deeper understanding of the mind, and can more constructively call you out when needed to bring about the growth you’re looking for.

A common and toxic sentiment, likely passed down through generations, due to fear. Unless having obtained permission, I am not disclosing what is discussed in session. Yes there are limits which include harming oneself, harming someone else, child or elder abuse. However just because someone may have a thought like “no one would care if I wasn’t here” or “what if I just don’t wake up” doesn’t mean confidentiality will be violated and an ambulance will be called. As with every other statement made in the therapy, first we ask a lot more questions. When possible, because I value transparency, I will notify you before taking any such action. Confidentiality may also be broken in cases of court orders for the record and an audit by insurance companies. Yes, we keep notes (which are your property) but my style is a bit more broad and vague for your discretion

While I cannot speak for all therapists and yes, being a therapist is my primary source of income, that does not negate the authentic care that I have for my clients. It’s hard to put into words but if you’re with the right therapist, you will feel their genuine and unconditional care for you.

Although it may not seem like it, important things that happened to us have long lasting impacts on us. It may be hard to admit but our childhoods shape us and traumas that happen throughout our lives do not simply disappear from our minds. It can be difficult and uncomfortable but if you don’t yet feel safe in the therapy room, you don’t have to talk about it right away. I do encourage you to work toward getting to a space where you do talk about it though.

Typically the way scheduling works is we pick a day and time that will work for us for every week. However, that might not be feasible for everyone. I do encourage my new clients to attend weekly but there can be flexibility in when we meet if our schedules align. Although I do not encourage biweekly meetings at first, we can reduce frequency when we feel the time is right based on how you’re feeling through the weeks and where we are at in meeting your goals.

May be a couple weeks or months or years. Did that last word startle you? It all depends on what’s bringing you in and what you’re looking to get out of the work. Maybe a couple weeks to months if you are working on reducing a couple symptoms of anxiety. Maybe a couple months to years if you’re working on changing your perspective toward life, building healthy relationships and solidifying new behaviors.

It varies! If you are in-network with Aetna then your responsibility is your co-pay or deductible. If you have any other health insurance provider, each session would be $200. I encourage my out of network (OON) clients to call their health insurance provider to find out their OON benefits and if possible to seek reimbursement. You would want to ask the representative if you have OON behavioral health coverage and if yes, you want to ask what your OON deductible is and what your OON reimbursement percentage is.

First, I hope you have access to a private and safe space around you where you would be for our session. Our practice has a system that we would set you up on prior to our first session where you would be able to join the video from. When that system is on the fritz, we also have a back up system.

One indication would be if reading parts of this website resonated and you thought something like “oh that’s me” or “is she reading my mind”. I promise I’m not, but I do read a lot of books and have a lot of experience. If what I wrote about my style and how I work my clients sounds like something you’d be interested in then we’re moving in the right direction!
I invite you to also check out the free practices I created and to check out my Instagram.
If all signs are a go then please schedule your free consultation, let the clinician know that you are interested in working with me, and we can take it from there.

First, you have to want to be in therapy and be ready to do the work. You also have to be with the right therapist. Those three points sounds simple enough but I promise you it is very difficult. If I am that right therapist, I will encourage a lot for outside of our once a week 45-minute session. You have thought in these ways and behaved in these ways for potentially over decades and it’s going to take a lot more than one 45-minute session once a week for a couple weeks to bring about the growth you’re looking for. I won’t give homework as in worksheets but I will make some suggestions when appropriate: I often provide questions for reflection, whether just internally or journaling, at the end of a session to be resumed the following week. I often provide book recommendations [link to resources page] which are usually books I’ve read or have had clients recommend to me. I often discuss practices, such as a gratitude or journaling or meditation practice, and modifications to our morning or evening routine. No one is ever required to do anything and I work with my clients to make sure there is not a lot of guilt if they were not able to follow up with a suggestion within a given week (but expect to hear that suggestion again in the near future)
